Angela Grassi, MS, RD, LDN – PCOS Expert

PROLOGUE: When I created my Guilt-Free RD name and tagline, and started sharing my philosophy, I received overwhelmingly positive feedback from other RDs and I knew I’d struck a cord with like-minded dietitians. That sparked an idea for a new way to interview, share and promote dietitians, their brands and their services. My traditional dietitian interviews are longer and more focused on sharing communications tips and tricks as well as the interviewee’s career journey. In contrast, these interviews will be shorter and more focused on the RD’s food philosophy and services. I hope you enjoy them and will contact me to share YOUR food philosophy!

Angela Grassi MS, RD, LDN

MELISSA: What is your food philosophy and why?
ANGELA: I believe that food is medicine. Food that is good for us can improve our health and longevity and make us feel good. This includes whole foods in the form of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, heart healthy fats, fish and other lean proteins.

MELISSA: Tell us a little more about you and your brand
ANGELA: After seeking treatment from numerous physicians, I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). PCOS affects 1 in 10 women and is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, yet it is still highly overlooked and underdiagnosed. Once I was diagnosed and saw the gap in the availability of providing evidence-based nutrition information and counseling to women with PCOS, I formed my company called the PCOS Nutrition Center.
I also saw the need for written resources for professionals and consumers. My first book, PCOS: The Dietitian’s Guide (now in its 2nd edition), was written to educate RDNs and other healthcare providers about PCOS because they may be the first to suspect it. Soon after that I wrote The PCOS Workbook: Your Guide to Complete Physical and Emotional Health which is a bestselling self-help guide to help women understand and take control over their PCOS symptoms. This past month I published The PCOS Nutrition Center Cookbook: 100 Easy and Delicious Whole Food Recipes to Beat PCOS which includes an introduction about how best to eat with PCOS along with a 4-week meal plan and shopping lists using the recipes.
I speak regularly about PCOS to consumers and professionals and in addition to writing articles for my blog, I am the about.com PCOS expert.

MELISSA: What are your services?
ANGELA: At the PCOS Nutrition Center, we provide personalized nutrition counseling to women with PCOS (by phone, online or in person). We also have evidence-based resources for professionals and consumers including the books mentioned above as well as the Nutrition Center Blog.

MELISSA: Do you have any resources and/or advice for other RDs to build their brand, boost their communication skills, start their own biz, etc.
ANGELA: If you’re not sure about where to start or want to get advice from other RDNs. The Nutrition Entrepreneur’s Dietetic Practice Group is such a valuable resource! The NE website has lots of tips and informational webinars to get your business up and running or resources to grow it. The NE listserve has been a great way to connect and get advice from other RDNs.

EPILOGUE: Thank you to Angela for sharing her food philosophy, brand and services with us! I hope you have been inspired!
