Lauren Fowler RDN, CD, CLT

PROLOGUE: When I created my Guilt-Free RD name and tagline, and started sharing my philosophy, I received overwhelmingly positive feedback from other RDs and I knew I’d struck a cord with like-minded dietitians. That sparked an idea for a new way to interview, share and promote dietitians, their brands and their services. My traditional dietitian interviews are longer and more focused on sharing communications tips and tricks as well as the interviewee’s career journey. In contrast, these interviews will be shorter and more focused on the RD’s food philosophy and services. I hope you enjoy them and will contact me to share YOUR food philosophy!

Lauren Fowler RDN, CD, CLT

MELISSA: Lauren, what is your food philosophy and why?
LAUREN: My philosophy is based around eating mainly whole foods and intuitive eating. I help clients re-learn a natural way of eating – intuitive eating – to use their own bodies to guide them to eating in a style that is energizing and nourishing. It helps create freedom with food based on nourishment rather than a deprivation, diet mindset. I also use a health-at-every-size approach to help clients build healthy habits rather than simply focusing on weight loss. This is the approach I personally use and teach my clients rather than creating and following rules or diets. It’s also important to look at the full picture with clients, like food sensitivities, hormonal imbalance, gut health, nutrient deficiencies, and other aspects of health like movement, sleep, and stress management.

MELISSA: Tell us a little more about you, your brand, and your services
LAUREN: I do a variety of things – I work locally at an integrative therapy center with clients mainly for eating disorders, disordered eating, and food sensitivities. Through my blog, I write about intuitive eating, health at every size, and self-love and self-trust. I also have two ebooks out sold on my site – one is a 30-Day Mindful Eating Challenge with daily exercises and journal prompts and the other is “Hips, Hunger, and the Pursuit of Healing” is co-authored with a therapist and shares stories and lessons on intuitive eating and body image. My brand is focused around building a healthy relationship with your body and looking at food in a different perspective than the common diet perspective in media. For example, I often work with clients to view food as nourishment and pleasure to get back to actually enjoying food rather than fearing it. It’s also essential to find nourishment beyond food – like doing creative projects to express yourself, adding play into your life, or connecting with others.

MELISSA: Do you have any resources and/or advice for other RDs to build their brand, boost their communication skills, start their own biz, etc.
LAUREN: If you want to build your brand, blog, or business, first start to getting really clear about what your interests are and what you are passionate about. When I first started writing, I wrote about health benefits about certain foods and nutrition topics because that’s what I thought others would want to read about. I realized that when I wrote posts about ditching diets or intuitive eating, they connected much better with readers, and I enjoyed writing them. By clarifying my interests into a few topics (rather than trying to write about everything), my readers know what to expect. It’s also essential to keep in mind connecting with readers. I feel so fulfilled with my work when I get emails from readers or clients about a post they resonated with, and that matters more to me than numbers or blog stats.

EPILOGUE: Thank you to Lauren for sharing her food philosophy, brand and services with us! I hope you have been inspired!
