PROLOGUE: When I created my Guilt-Free RD name and tagline, and started sharing my philosophy, I received overwhelmingly positive feedback from other RDs and I knew I’d struck a cord with like-minded dietitians. That sparked an idea for a new way to interview, share and promote dietitians, their brands and their services. My traditional dietitian interviews are longer and more focused on sharing communications tips and tricks as well as the interviewee’s career journey. In contrast, these interviews will be shorter and more focused on the RD’s food philosophy. I hope you enjoy them and will contact me to share YOUR food philosophy!

Ruth Frechman MA, RDN, CPT

MELISSA: Ruth, what is your food philosophy and why?

RUTH: I grew up eating everything and continue to eat everything but in moderation. As a “nutrition expert,” I know exactly what to eat and how much to eat and basically follow the MyPlate guidelines. At a very young age (third grade), I decided that I didn’t want osteoporosis. Milk and other foods with calcium have always been a big part of my diet. –Guess I’ve always been a dietitian! My father died when I was 3 ½ years old. With no health insurance, I didn’t want to be a burden to my mother with three kids to raise. I tried to stay healthy to keep doctor bills to a minimum. To this day, I do everything I do, because I am passionate about prevention.

MELISSA: Tell us a little more about you and your brand

RUTH: I believe in making eating (and life) easy and practical, so I try to make it as easy as possible for my clients. Everyone knows that they should eat less and exercise more. However, they may not be motivated to change their habits. I try to make it fun. By making food and physical activity your friend, it makes it easier.

MELISSA: What are your services?

RUTH: Besides being a registered dietitian nutritionist, I recently became a certified personal trainer. I have been the owner of On the Weigh, a nutrition therapy and consulting business in Burbank, CA for around 25 years. I specialize in wellness and weight management for children, adolescents, and adults but also work with individuals for cardiac risk reduction, diabetes support, vegetarian eating, and sports nutrition. Besides counseling, I speak, blog, consult, and write.
My book is very popular with my clients. The Food Is My Friend Diet is an easy-to-follow, 30-day guide to lose weight and conquer emotional eating by making healthy lifestyle changes. Readers learn how to keep old food friends, make new ones, and melt the pounds away.

MELISSA: Where can we find you and follow you online?

MELISSA: Do you have any resources and/or advice for other RDs to build their brand, boost their communication skills, start their own biz, etc.

RUTH: Since I didn’t get a degree in business, I watch a ton of webinars and attend a lot of workshops to learn how to market myself, build my brand and platform, increase my writing skills, improve social media, etc. I have been a member of Toastmasters for many years. Everyone has different strengths. Make the most of what you have. My advice is to do what you love and never give up.

EPILOGUE: Thank you to Ruth for sharing her food philosophy, brand and services with us! I hope you have been inspired!
